Post a police officer on Smithtown street

Perhaps we need to address the pedestrian fatalities on Main Street in Smithtown differently ["Schumer urges feds, NY to fix deadly road," News, June 9]. We have built a fence to discourage jaywalking. I have observed pedestrians climbing the fence.
We have posted 30 mph signs, but automobiles race through Main Street at great speed. The presence of a uniformed police officer would deter this behavior.
The occasional speeder could easily be apprehended, and jaywalkers could be stopped on the spot.
