Tropical Storm Irene hit hard and moved out fast, leaving Long Islanders to cope with the mess left behind.

FALLEN WIRES, TREES AND LIMBS

If you see a downed wire, stay away from it, don't even drive over it.

That's the message from emergency officials in the aftermath of Irene.

Residents who encounter downed wires should keep away from them and call the Long Island Power Authority, said Joe Williams, commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.

Downed power lines should be reported to the utility by calling 800-490-0075.

Suffolk. Downed tree calls should be made to the town or city so officials can coordinate with emergency personnel, said Joe Williams, commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.

Nassau. If the tree is down on public property, calls should generally be made to the town, said police spokesman James Imperiale. Only if the tree is down in a roadway should calls go to the county's nonemergency number, 888-684-4274, so the appropriate town and county officials can determine which entity is responsible for removal.

If the downed tree is on private property, calls should be made to contractors and other tree removal service. If the tree is touching power lines, call LIPA.

UTILITIES

LIPA. Islandwide power outages and downed power lines should be reported to the utility by calling 800-490-0075. Outages also can be reported at liaccount.com/outage/Report.

Roadways.

TRASH PICKUP AND RECYCLING

Residents should call their towns or city to learn of any changes to trash and recycling pickup schedules.

STATE PARKS

All state parks will be closed Monday while the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation assesses and cleans up storm damage.

  COURTS

Nassau. Trial jurors, whether reporting for the first time or selected on a trial, should not report Monday. All grand jurors who have been newly summoned to appear for the first time Monday should instead appear Tuesday.
