Protect upstate water supply from fracking
Thank you for "Fears of global warming" [News, April 18]. Your story focused on a Cornell University study revealing the serious dangers of hydrofracking, a natural gas drilling technique. This issue will be a priority for state legislators after the state Department of Environmental Conservation releases its environmental impact study this summer.
Our legislature will decide whether or not hydrofracking will be permitted and how it will be regulated. Its decision will have a major impact on our state's long term economic and public health.
Drilling companies are reluctant to disclose the chemicals that are injected into the gas wells, as well as those that come out as "outflow" and sludge, because they include suspected cancer-causing substances. This will affect everyone.
Drill waste is being disposed of at New York landfills. The New York City water supply comes from reservoirs in upstate New York.
Our true wealth lies in the protection of our clean water supply and healthy people. Let's stop fracking and develop clean energy alternatives.
