Public can comment on DEC cleanup plan in Great Neck

A public comment period is open for a proposed cleanup plan at the Alert Fire Co.’s annex in Great Neck to remediate ground contamination left over from a former dry-cleaning operation.

The 7,100-square-foot property at 140 Steamboat Rd., which the department uses as a garage and storage space, had been contaminated with chemicals from a dry-cleaning company that operated there before 1988, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The remediation plan, developed by volunteers at the Alert Engine, Hook and Ladder and Hose Company No. 1 under the state’s Voluntary Cleanup Program, involves the installation of a system designed to remediate groundwater contamination and control soil vapor from coming through the fire house next door, a deed restriction for the property and a site management plan.

Documents about the project can be found at the Great Neck Public Library or on the website of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The public comment period began on Friday and continues through Jan. 31, 2013.
