Pues helps Long Beach take Game 1 of hockey finals

Liam Pues had three goals and two assists to lead top-seeded Long Beach over Wantagh/Seaford, 8-1, in Game 1 of the Nassau ice hockey finals last night. Michael Schwartz added a goal and three assists for Long Beach (18-1-3). Sean Brolly scored in the second period for No. 3 Wantagh/Seaford. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Long Beach Arena.

BASKETBALL

Bayport-Blue Point 57, Miller Place 29: Miles Prendergast had 23 points, 13 rebounds and three steals to lead No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point (17-3) in the Suffolk Class A boys basketball semifinals. Reid Drzal added 15 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and five blocks. Taylor Sowah scored 17 points for No. 3 Miller Place. Bayport-Blue Point will face top-seeded Harborfields in the final at 2 p.m. Sunday at Farmingdale State.

St. Anthony's 56, Sacred Heart 35: Jennifer Sixsmith scored 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter and Symone Kelly added 17 points and 14 rebounds as No. 3 St. Anthony's (20-5) prevailed in the first round of the CHSAA girls basketball playoffs. Becky Conto and Kristen Brent each scored eight points for No. 6 Sacred Heart. St. Anthony's will face No. 2 St. John the Baptist at noon on Sunday at C.W. Post.

St. Mary's 64, Holy Trinity 50: Shannon Flynn had 20 points, 12 steals and eight assists to lead No. 4 St. Mary's (16-7) in the first round of the CHSAA playoffs. Jessica Mattone scored eight of her 11 points in a 23-16 fourth quarter and Sarah Kluth added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Korzevinski scored 16 points to lead the fifth-seeded Titans. St. Mary's advances to play No. 1 Kellenberg at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at C.W. Post.

Long Island Lutheran 59, St. Anthony (Jersey City) 30: Jessica DeNicola had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Long Island Lutheran (19-3) in non-league. Sam Plunkett added nine points and four assists and Christina Raiti scored eight points.
