Pulitzer prize winner speaks at Old Westbury

Journalist Sonia Nazario, author of the Pulitzer-prize winning book “Enrique’s Journey” about Central American children who come illegally to the U.S. to reunite with family, will discuss Tuesday night the experiences of those immigrants at the SUNY College at Old Westbury.

Her lecture, which will be open to the general public, is the culmination of the school’s selection of Nazario’s book as a reading requirement for all of the college’s freshmen class this year.

The book follows the story of a Honduran boy who leaves his homeland alone and follows a dangerous path to seek his mother living in the U.S.

“The experience of children being separated from their parents by the immigration process, and often coming to the U.S. and to schools on Long Island, is something we need to understand,” said Laura Anker, an American Studies professor who directs the first-year reading program at SUNY Old Westbury.

The lecture will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Student Union Multipurpose Room on campus, located on 223 Store Hill Road in Old Westbury.
