Ragusa, Bowen help Island Trees advance
James Ragusa and Matt Bowen had run-scoring doubles in the top of the sixth as No. 8 Island Trees upended second-seeded Wantagh, 7-5, Saturday in the deciding Game 3 of a Nassau Class A baseball quarterfinal.
Ragusa and Bowen's hits gave Island Trees a 7-4 lead.
Bowen struck out six, walked two and allowed two earned runs on six hits for Island Trees (15-7-2), which advances to a best-of-three semifinal against No. 5 Manhasset, a 5-3 winner over sixth-seeded Bethpage, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Patchogue-Medford 5, Smithtown West 0: Dan D'Onofrio struck out eight, walked two and threw a four-hitter to lead No. 7 Patchogue-Medford (15-7) in a Class AA loser's bracket second-round contest. D'Onofrio went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs in the win.
Bay Shore 8, Longwood 6: Chris Dannenfelser hit a two-run single during a three-run bottom of the fourth to give No. 11 Bay Shore (16-7) a 7-4 lead in a Class AA loser's bracket second-round game. Greg Weissert went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, Tyler White went 3-for-3 with two runs and Justin Border got the save for Bay Shore.
Sayville 6, Miller Place 4: Ryan Aloise went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and struck out four, allowed two hits and one run in innings of relief for the save for No. 5 Sayville (14-8) in a Class A loser's bracket first-round game. Michael Rahn went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
Kellenberg 4, Chaminade 3: Joe Lombardo scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth to give No. 4 Kellenberg (13-7) a 4-3 lead in a CHSAA playoff elimination game. Bobby Kelly struck out five and allowed two earned runs on five hits for the win. Tom Bishop pitched the seventh to earn his third save of the season. Kellenberg will face No. 1 St. Anthony's in a semifinal at Farmingdale State at 7 p.m. Monday.
SOFTBALL
St. Anthony's 10, Holy Trinity 2: Michelle Carbone struck out six and allowed one earned run on three hits for No. 3 St. Anthony's (18-6) in a CHSAA loser's bracket semifinal. Carbone went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, while Taylor Lester and Aileen Reiley each added two hits and two RBIs. St. Anthony's will face No. 2 St. John the Baptist in a loser's bracket final at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hofstra.
St. John the Baptist 5, St. Anthony's 2: Mallory McClafferty had a two-run home run for No. 2 St. John the Baptist (17-5) in a CHSAA loser's bracket semifinal.
BOYS LACROSSE
Holy Trinity 8, St. John the Baptist 7: Mike Laviano had three goals, including the winner with eight seconds left, and added an assist to lead No. 3 Holy Trinity (6-8) in a CHSAA Class AA semifinal. Holy Trinity will play No. 1 Kellenberg in the final on Thursday at Hofstra.
Chaminade 5, Delbarton 3: Paul Urbank scored both of his goals during a 4-1 second quarter for Chaminade (16-1) in non-league. Brendan Caputo added two goals for Chaminade, which plays St. Anthony's for the CHSAA AAA title at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Hofstra.
Sayville 10, Rocky Point 5: Connie Nielsen scored three goals and Gianna Minogue made 12 saves to lead No. 3 Sayville (13-4) in a Suffolk Class B quarterfinal.
Hauppauge 15, Miller Place 7: Taylor Ranftle had five goals and five assists and Stephanie Peragallo had five ground balls and forced six turnovers for No. 1 Hauppauge (14-1) in a Suffolk Class B quarterfinal. Lindsey Alfano had four ground balls and three forced turnovers and Jessica Volpe had three ground balls and three forced turnovers for the Eagles, who will host No. 4 Harborfields in a semifinal at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
