Raiders fire Jackson after one season

The Raiders fired coach Hue Jackson Tuesday after one season. The move came four days after they announced the hiring of Reggie McKenzie as general manager. It marked a rapid fall for Jackson, who took charge of personnel decisions after longtime owner Al Davis died Oct. 8.

Jackson traded for quarterback Carson Palmer after Jason Campbell broke his collarbone, costing Oakland a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional 2013 second-rounder. The Raiders (8-8) lost four of their last five and missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year. Report: Spags plans

to interview with Eagles

Steve Spagnuolo may be returning to the NFC East.

The NFL Network reported that the former Giants defensive coordinator, who helped win Super Bowl XLII, will meet with the Eagles by the end of the week and could wind up on their defensive staff, perhaps even as the coordinator. Spagnuolo left the Giants after the 2008 season to become Rams coach but was fired recently.

Spagnuolo apparently will make Philadelphia his first stop on the re-employment trail. Spagnuolo was a defensive assistant for eight years on Andy Reid's staff before joining the Giants in 2007.

It's unclear if Spagnuolo will replace Juan Castillo as Eagles defensive coordinator, but if he's hired he'll become a key decision-maker and perhaps even play-caller.

There was speculation that Spagnuolo could rejoin the Giants next season if they decided to part with coordinator Perry Fewell. But the Giants' defense has rounded into form, and it was learned that Fewell signed an extension through the 2012 season last January.

Derrick Mason is retiring after 15 seasons in which he caught 943 passes for 12,061 yards and 66 TDs.
