Rally to focus on Hempstead animal shelter

Animal advocates have designated Friday as Nassau County Humane Rights for Animals Lobby Day, featuring a rally on behalf of animals at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter.
The group Hope for Hempstead Shelter will hold the rally to demand greater accountability and safer practices at the shelter. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Enrichment Mini-Center, 1026 Broadway in Woodmere.
Organizers said the event is an opportunity for animal rights activists to voice concerns about the shelter animals. The group is upset that the town has not yet created a volunteer program at the shelter and has called on state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli to conduct an independent financial and operational audit of the facility.
Town officials have said the shelter has taken steps to enhance the quality of care, including adding veterinary services, retaining an animal behaviorist and hiring a rescue liaison and pet adoption coordinator. The town has organized a committee to search for a new shelter director, and officials say a volunteer program will be formed when a director is in place.
