Political newcomer Samuel J. Gonzalez has successfully filed petitions to challenge Assemb. Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) in a Democratic primary in the 6th District.

Gonzalez, 51, a Brentwood resident for the past decade, filed nearly double the 500 signatures required to become eligible for the ballot.

According to his website, Gonzalez says he would “fight vigorously” for extra school funding, encourage the hiring of teachers who live in the local school district, and seek funding for early childhood intervention. He said he also will press for an increased police presence to curb drug activities and crime and will make efforts to encourage new homeowners and bring in new local businesses.

Ramos, a former police detective, has been a state lawmaker for the past decade, and won his last election by nearly a three-to-one margin.

The primary will be held Sept. 13.

Neither man could be reached for comment.
