The Phillies lost to the Marlins, 5-4, after allowing four walks in the 14th inning yesterday in Miami, then lobbied to play the game over.

The Phillies' Hunter Pence was ruled out on fan interference after initially being awarded a double in the sixth, and the ruling change might have cost the Phillies two runs. They played the game under protest.

Pence was ruled out when a spectator wearing a Phillies jersey leaned over the outfield railing and tried to catch the ball with his Phillies cap. Marlins rightfielder Bryan Petersen tried to make the catch, but his glove brushed the fan's cap, and the ball deflected to the warning track for an apparent double that put runners at second and third with none out.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel thought the hit was a home run. Marlins manager Jack McKeon wanted Pence called out. After the video review, the umpires sided with McKeon.

The fan involved was college student Alex Dicandio. His take on the ruling? "It should have been a home run," he said.

Manuel said he didn't request a replay review, noted that a defensive play can't be reviewed and added that he protested because the play should not have been reviewable. McKeon thought the bottom line was that the umpires got it right, even if the play shouldn't have been reviewed. Crew chief Joe West said calling for a replay was appropriate because the Phillies argued the drive was a homer. Said West, "Once we look at the replay, we have to use all the evidence that replay gives us."

Braves 4, Dodgers 3: Martin Prado's RBI single in the ninth lifted host Atlanta.

Diamondbacks 4, Giants 1: Willie Bloomquist hit a go-ahead two-run triple after Ryan Roberts' homer tied it in the eighth for visiting Arizona.

Rangers 11, Red Sox 4: After his team played an entire season series with the Rangers with none of the games decided by fewer than four runs, Red Sox manager Terry Francona pointed to hitting as the main reason. "When you get to the bullpen before you want to, both teams have such good offenses and you make a mistake and you spread it out," he said. "We haven't played that many close games."

The Red Sox lost six of 10 against the Rangers, a potential postseason opponent, and yielded 65 runs in the season series -- 51 of them in the six losses.

John Lackey pitched into the sixth and left with the Sox trailing 3-0. Felix Doubront then allowed three inherited runners to score. Josh Hamilton capped Texas' seven-run sixth with a bases-loaded triple.

Tigers 18, White Sox 2: Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks each homered and drove in four runs for host Detroit. Alex Avila had four of the Tigers' 24 hits.

Rays 8, Orioles 1: Jeremy Hellickson's four-hitter led the Rays.

Angels 4, Twins 1: Joel Piñeiro posted his first victory in almost two months for the host Angels.

Indians 9, Royals 6: After a groundout in the fourth, Shelley Duncan made a minor adjustment to his swing at the suggestion of hitting coach Bruce Fields. In his next two at-bats, the former Yankee pounded a three-run homer into the gusting wind and added a two-run shot for the visitors. Duncan had a career-high five RBIs. -- AP
