It was a rare sight on Long Island today: Parents and children waiting for the kids' school bus.

While the vast majority of school districts closed Thursday after about a foot of snow was dumped on Long Island overnight, William Floyd School District, whose high school students were to take Regents exams, only called for a delayed opening.

“I don’t know if I want her going on the bus,” said Missy Bittrolff, who was waiting on the corner of Windus Drive and Flintlock Drive with her daughter Alyssa, 6, a first-grader at William Floyd Elementary School in Shirley. Bittrolff said she was concerned about safety on the roads.

“It’s also a safety issue for the teachers who don’t live in town,” added Rosa DiSalvo, whose daughters, Daniella, 7, and Bella, 6, also attend William Floyd elementary and were waiting for the bus.
