Brookhaven Town residents can begin earning points Wednesday in a new program that provides discounts on products for people who recycle.

The town in March hired RecycleBank — a subsidiary of  Pennsylvania-based Recycle Rewards — to give “grocery store savings, drugstore coupons, and discounts” to residents who increase their household recycling, according to the company’s website.

Residents who participate can earn points and cash them in for discounts from companies including Bobbique, Blue Point Brewing Co., Mama’s Restaurant, Brickhouse Brewery, Monster Mini Golf, Lemon Tree salons, Subway and Outback Steak House, town officials said. To sign up, residents must register at recyclebank.com and verify their home address.

Brookhaven will pay RecycleBank $50,000 a year plus bonuses based on the amount of uptick in recycling, town records state.
