Recycling compliance goes up in Brookhaven

Recycling has jumped in the Town of Brookhaven in the first quarter of 2011, the town says.

The amount of waste recycled in the first three months of the year has increased almost 10 percent over last year’s first quarter, according to the town. Recycled garbage accounted for 12.5 percent of the town’s solid waste in the first quarter, compared with 11.4 percent in the same period last year.

The town had launched a public service announcement campaign to encourage residents to think recycling.

Communities with notable increases in recycling include Center Moriches, 38.8 percent, Farmingville, 35.6 percent and Coram, 23.4 percent, according to figures provided by the town.

“I thank all of the residents of Brookhaven for going green and increasing their household recycling efforts,” Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement. “This just shows that if everyone does their part, it can make a huge difference for the environment.”
