Red Sox hit 5 HRs, power past Rays

BOSTON -- David Ortiz drove in five runs and hit one of Boston's five home runs yesterday as the Red Sox pounded the Rays for the second straight day, 13-5.

Ortiz's two-run shot tied it at 5 in the fifth inning before Mike Aviles -- replacing an injured Jacoby Ellsbury as the leadoff hitter -- homered to start a three-run seventh inning. Cody Ross hit a two-run double in the seventh and a two-run homer during a five-run eighth.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Dustin Pedroia hit Boston's other two home runs.

The outburst was more remarkable because Boston scored a total of 57 runs in 18 games against Tampa Bay last year.

The Red Sox rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning as Clay Buchholz (1-0) settled down after that rough start.

Ellsbury, last year's runner-up in the AL MVP voting, went on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a partially dislocated right shoulder. He was hurt trying to break up a double play Friday.

"I know Jacoby's a big part of this offense and he's a good ballplayer -- great ballplayer, actually," Aviles said. "But we've got to bear down and everybody's got to step up and put the pieces together and play as a team."

Jeremy Hellickson struggled in his first start since being hit in the head with a ball during batting practice Wednesday. He gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. "The cutter was good. I think the first two home runs were good pitches," he said. "I've just got to throw more strikes. I felt good. Arm felt good. Nothing with the head. Just made some bad pitches."

Tampa Bay had taken its first-inning lead on an RBI double by Carlos Peña and a three-run homer by Luke Scott.
