ALBANY — Republican State Sen. Alexis Weik announced Tuesday that she will not seek reelection in the state’s 8th Senate District, which includes Sayville and parts of Long Island’s southern shore.
"This decision comes after careful consideration of my health and my family, who have stood beside me through every long day and every challenge," Weik, 53, of Sayville, said in a news release announcing her decision. Weik said she plans to finish out her term, which ends in December 2026, and intends to "finish strong."
The decision leaves an open seat in the 8th District, which straddles Nassau and Suffolk Counties and is largely Republican-leaning. As of November, the district had 65,847 active Democratic voters and 101,927 active Republican voters, according to state Board of Elections data.
Weik is currently serving her third term in the Senate, having represented what was previously the 3rd Senate District before redistricting. Before that, she served as Islip Town’s receiver of taxes for nearly 10 years.
In the release, she touted her work to get the Browns River dredged and to create a natural wetland preserve along the river's banks, as well as to establish the Friends of Heckscher State Park and push to create the Oakdale Watershed.
