<p>Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey got Rob Astorino, Republican candidate for governor of New York, a bit of media attention Tuesday — even if it wasn’t the kind the Westchester county executive set out to get.</p> 
<p>It started with Christie, campaigning for a GOP hopeful in Connecticut, saying of New York that at the Republican Governors Association, of which he became chairman in November: “We don’t pay for landslides and we don’t invest in lost causes.”</p> 
<p>“If the New York race becomes competitive, I’ll consider campaigning in the New York race, but right now, by the public polls, there’s a lot more competitive races like this one in Connecticut,” he said, according to nj.com.</p> 
<p>That led Astorino, in a rare joint appearance with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s primary opponent Zephyr Teachout, to say Christie has not been quite the same since the “Bridgegate” scandal broke.</p> 
<p>And, Astorino said: “If Gov. Christie is unable to help a Republican candidate for governor, then maybe he should consider stepping down as chairman of the RGA. That’s his job.”</p> 
<p>Astorino said he did not know when asked if he thought there was a pact between Cuomo and Christie who jointly run the Port Authority.</p> 
<p>“Look, Gov. Christie and I have had a very good relationship. I think he’s done a good job as governor of New Jersey. However, a lot changed since Bridgegate, and this is obviously controlled by two states.</p> 
<p>“Whatever Governor Christie knew or didn’t know is probably the same for Governor Cuomo. And if anything is being held back that Governor Cuomo knows, and if he’s holding that over Governor Christie’s head, I don’t know. But clearly for Governor Christie to make that kind of comment as chairman of the RGA is&nbsp; ... not his role.”</p>

<p> Gov. Chris Christie's administration is continuing its push to show that Hoboken has not been treated differently than other cities in its efforts to gain Superstorm Sandy relief funding.</p> 
<p> This weekend, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer claimed that relief funding was withheld from the severely flooded city because she wouldn't sign off on a real estate venture whose lawyer and lobbyist are close to the governor.</p> 
<p> Marc Ferzan, executive director of the Governor's Office of Recovery and Rebuilding, held a conference call with reporters Monday.</p> 
<p> He says the state has tried to prioritize its funding and programs to address the "communities most in need." He also notes that funding requests outweigh the state's resources.</p> 
<p> Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (gwah-DOHN'-yo) says Zimmer's claim about aid being tied to the development is "false" and "illogical."</p>

<p> New Jersey's lieutenant governor on Monday strongly denied a claim that Superstorm Sandy relief funding was withheld from a severely flooded city because the mayor wouldn't sign off on a politically connected real estate venture.</p> 
<p> Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno called Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer's claims "false" and "illogical" at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration in Union City, the day before Gov. Chris Christie's second-term inauguration.</p> 
<p> Zimmer said Saturday that Guadagno pulled her aside at a supermarket opening in May and said Hoboken's storm recovery funds hinged on Zimmer's approval of a commercial development whose lawyer and lobbyist are close to the governor. On Sunday, Zimmer told CNN the ultimatum was delivered on behalf of the governor, a possible 2016 GOP presidential candidate.</p> 
<p> The mayor's description of the conversation "is not only false but is illogical and does not withstand scrutiny when all of the facts are examined," Guadagno said. "Any suggestion that Sandy funds were tied to the approval of any project in New Jersey is completely false."</p> 
<p> Zimmer, a Democrat, met with investigators from the U.S. attorney's office for several hours Sunday afternoon and gave them journal entries she said were made at the time of the conversation. She has also offered to take a lie-detector test or testify under oath.</p> 
<p> Federal authorities and state legislators are already investigating another scandal involving the Christie administration — allegations that the governor's top aides orchestrated traffic jams in a northern New Jersey town by blocking off lanes to the George Washington Bridge, possibly to punish the town's Democratic mayor for not endorsing the Republican governor for re-election.</p> 
<p> Assemblyman John Wisniewski, the former chairman of the state Democratic Party who is leading a legislative probe, said the new allegations may be part of a pattern of abuses of power in the Christie administration and would be treated seriously.</p> 
<p> Republicans called the investigation partisan and called on Wisniewski to step down. Wisniewski said the investigation by his bipartisan panel would continue.</p> 
<p> The lieutenant governor did not take questions Monday.</p> 
<p> Community Affairs Commissioner Richard Constable, a member of Christie's cabinet and a second official who Zimmer said repeated the Sandy threat at a separate event in May, also issued a statement denying the mayor's claims.</p> 
<p> "Mayor Zimmer's allegations are patently false and absurd on their face," Constable said through spokeswoman Lisa Ryan. "I welcome a full and thorough law enforcement review of her libelous claims."</p>

<p>Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, in his most expansive comments on the George Washington Bridge scandal, said Saturday that the Port Authority might need changes in how it operates.</p>
<p>Speaking out about a controversy he's largely avoided discussing publicly, the governor told reporters he's awaiting results of inquiries into the four-day closure of bridge access lanes that jammed traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., as an apparent act of political revenge. </p>
<p>"I think we should do one thing at a time: Find out exactly what happened here, when, who's to blame," said Cuomo, who shares control of the Port Authority with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. </p>
<p>"The second question would then be: if there were procedures that need to be changed, if there were rules that were violated at the Port [Authority], then obviously we should look at that."</p>
<p>Christie has apologized but said he was "blindsided" by revelations that a top aide and PA appointees plotted to paralyze Fort Lee traffic.</p>
<p>Cuomo spoke outside the Harlem headquarters of Al Sharpton, where he attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration and cultivated support for his re-election bid.</p>
<p>Cuomo avoided criticizing Christie and praised his own Port Authority appointee, executive director Patrick Foye, who angrily ordered the lanes reopened once he found out.</p>
<p>"It was done on the Jersey side of the bridge," Cuomo said. "And the Jersey officials handled it. And when Foye did find out, he was clearly shocked and surprised and not happy."</p>
<p>Cuomo spoke for about 20 minutes in Sharpton's storefront auditorium, touting his administration's record in reducing the prison population, keeping city juvenile delinquents in their communities instead of shipping them upstate and strengthening gun control.</p>
<p>Cuomo also got applause when he mentioned wanting to end New York's practice of trying teenage defendants as adults and a goal to make prekindergarten universally available statewide. He didn't mention Mayor Bill de Blasio -- who made universal pre-K his top campaign promise -- or de Blasio's plan to tax the rich to pay for it. De Blasio's office did not return an email seeking comment.</p>
<p>Cuomo, who is running for re-election this year, heaped praise on Sharpton along with good-natured ribbing.</p>
<p>"[He's] now a big, national TV star, personality. Not just a national TV star but a very handsome fashion model TV star, very debonair, well-dressed, really," Cuomo said in a singsong voice. " . . . I knew him when, though. I knew him back in the day when he was on the corner with a bullhorn and there was nobody around him and he was not quite as fashionable."</p>
<p>Sharpton's response drew laughs and hoots:</p>
<p>"Now, all that flattering talk that he gave about me, you do know it's re-election year for the governor. I'll just leave it there."</p>

<p> "The last week has certainly tested this administration," Christie said, referring to what happened after emails went public showing that top Christie allies created a traffic jam on George Washington Bridge access lanes in Fort Lee in September as an act of political revenge against the borough's Democratic mayor, who refused to endorse Christie, a Republican, for re-election.</p> 
<p> "I know our citizens deserve better. Much better. Now I am the governor, and I am ultimately responsible for all that happens on my watch -- both good and bad," Christie said. "Without a doubt we will cooperate with all appropriate inquiries to ensure that this breach of trust does not happen again."</p> 
<p> Christie did not elaborate on what he believes constitutes "appropriate inquiries."</p> 
<p> Thursday, Democratic legislators plan to seek to extend their subpoena power to continue to investigate the scandal, by calling witnesses and obtaining more documents. Separately, New Jersey's top federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, opened a preliminary inquiry. The inspector general of the Port Authority, which controls the bridge, also is investigating.</p> 
<p> Christie's speech remarks devoted about 150 of more than 4,100 words to the scandal, which led to the ouster or resignations of four top Christie loyalists and could damage Christie's presidential ambitions.</p> 
<p> The rest of the speech discussed proposals to extend the school year, end bail for violent arrestees, hold the line on property taxes, modify public-sector pensions and encourage government consolidation.</p> 
<p> Hours before Christie delivered the annual address, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee released a commercial titled "The State of the State? Embarrassed."</p> 
<p> "As Chris Christie gives his State of the State speech," the ad says over minor-key piano music, "he's once again made New Jersey into a national punchline."</p> 
<p> Christie was first elected in 2009 and re-elected in November.</p>

<p>Democratic legislators will move in the coming week to extend their investigation into a George Washington Bridge traffic jam that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's appointees plotted as political revenge.</p>
<p>New Jersey's Assembly -- which released emails documenting how officials loyal to the Republican governor plotted to paralyze traffic by closing bridge access lanes in Fort Lee -- will seek to reauthorize its power to subpoena documents and compel witnesses to testify under oath, according to a statement Saturday from Speaker-elect Vincent Prieto (D-Secaucus).</p>
<p>"The documents released this week related to the George Washington Bridge situation clearly show the need for a continued thorough investigation by the New Jersey General Assembly," he said in the statement. "Many questions remain unanswered about this threat to public safety and abuse of power."</p>
<p>Prieto plans to call a special Assembly session Thursday. Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski (D-Sayreville), who has been leading the inquiry, told the Star-Ledger newspaper that he wants to subpoena Christie's now-fired deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly, Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak and possibly other administration officials. Wisniewski said he believed Christie staffers more senior than Kelly were involved in the lane closure decision, the report said. </p>
<p>For months, Christie had ridiculed the notion that the lane closures were ordered as political punishment for Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat, who did not endorse him for re-election in 2013.</p>
<p>The mocking turned to mea culpa when emails revealed Kelly ordering "some traffic problems in Fort Lee." Christie, apologizing at a news conference Thursday, denied any involvement. He fired Kelly and said he had severed ties with a top campaign aide. </p>
<p>Two Christie appointees on the Port Authority, which runs the bridge, resigned last month.</p>

<p> Top New York officials on the Port Authority were livid that their New Jersey counterparts allied with Gov. Chris Christie covertly ordered lanes near the George Washington Bridge closed in September, causing huge traffic jams, endangering lives and likely violating state and federal laws, new documents showed Friday.</p> 
<p> The new documents revealed machinations to make it appear a traffic study was being done, keep local Fort Lee officials and residents protesting the resulting chaos in the dark and to deflect press questions after PA Executive Director Patrick Foye ordered a halt to the lane closures.</p> 
<p> "I believe this hasty and ill-advised decision violates Federal Law and the laws of both states," an irate Foye emailed PA executives who included Christie appointees.</p> 
<p> "To be clear, I will get to the bottom of this abusive decision which violates everything this agency stands for; I intend to learn how PA process was wrongfully subverted and the public interest damaged to say nothing of the credibility of this agency."</p> 
<p> The nearly 2,000 pages of documents were released by a New Jersey legislative committee one day after Christie apologized for the closures, orchestrated by a top aide and David Wildstein, one of his PA appointees, to punish the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee for not endorsing Christie for re-election.</p> 
<p> The Republican governor, a potential 2016 Republican presidential contender, sought Thursday to contain the damage, firing a top aide he said had "lied to me" to cover up the political motives for the closures and cutting ties with a top political adviser.</p> 
<p> Christie said he wasn't aware of their actions until emails and texts surfaced Wednesday. He hasn't been implicated in the scheme.</p> 
<p> Emails showed that PA officials from New Jersey refused to answer questions from Port Authority police about the closures, and that even top bridge staff weren't sure why a purported traffic study was launched to justify the closures or how long it would last.</p> 
<p> One email showed officials put together a presentation on the third day of the massive traffic jams that sought to report "early assessment of the benefits" of a traffic study. It said the conclusions were "TBD," or to be determined.</p> 
<p> Another email revealed that officials left the closures in place even after complaints that emergency vehicles were having trouble getting through the snarled traffic.</p> 
<p> The emails also showed that New Jersey officials scrambled to control damaging and even privately accusing Foye -- an appointee of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo -- of leaking internal memos on the matter to the news media.</p> 
<p> Foye ordered the lanes reopened Sept. 13. That morning, David Wildstein, the Port Authority director for interstate capital projects, and Bridget Anne Kelly, Christie's deputy chief of staff -- corresponded.</p> 
<p> "The New York side gave Fort Lee back all three lanes this morning," Wildstein wrote. "We are appropriately going nuts. Samson helping us retaliate," a reference to Port Authority chairman David Samson, a Christie appointee.</p> 
<p> "What??" Kelly replied three minutes later.</p> 
<p> "Yes, unreal," Wildstein concluded.</p> 
<p> The Cuomo administration declined to comment Friday.</p> 
<p> Documents that emerged Wednesday demonstrated the lane closures that started Sept. 9 were meant as political revenge on the mayor of Fort Lee.</p> 
<p> "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee," Kelly wrote to Wildstein.</p> 
<p> "Got it," he replied.</p> 
<p> Foye wasn't the only irate New York appointee. Port Authority Vice Chairman Scott Rechler emailed about the closures: "This is terribly disturbing and incomprehensible to me. How can a decision like this be made without it being discussed and considered at the highest level?"</p> 
<p> Commuters were furious, too.</p> 
<p> One person complained that the Port Authority "doesn't care about their customers and they are playing God with people's jobs." The caller said the traffic jam caused her husband to be 40 minutes late to work "a job he just got after being out of work for 1 yr +."</p> 
<p> Police stuck with the job of sorting out the chaos were kept out of the loop.</p> 
<p> In one email dated Sept. 6, Deputy Police Inspector Darcy Licorish of the Port Authority was invited by Robert Durando, bridge manager, to be "briefed on facility operation." Told about plans to use just one entrance lane to the bridge, Licorish asked whether this was permanent or temporary.</p> 
<p> "The manager could not supply an answer to that or other questions," wrote Licorish, who then asked if townships were notified. "No answers could be supplied."</p> 
<p> Emails say Durando "was instructed by Wildstein," to "change the traffic pattern."</p> 
<p> A New Jersey legislator said Friday the documents gave a "partial picture."</p> 
<p> "The emails raise significant questions about the authenticity of the governor's statement" on Thursday, said State Assembly Deputy Speaker John Wisniewski. the transportation Committee chair. "What you see is a number of significant figures in the governor's administration who were involved either in the immediate days of the lane closures or in the effort to keep a lid on the media inquiries about the lane closure all the way through approving the exit statement for David Wildstein when he resigned."</p> 
<p> Wisniewski apparently referred to a Dec. 6 email from Michael Drewniak sent to Wildstein. It contained a draft resignation statement and a note: "This is my revised -- which I sent to the Gov and he approved . . ."</p> 
<p> The email doesn't indicate that Wildstein's resignation was tied to the lane closure controversy.</p>

<p> On Sept. 13, Port Authority executive director Patrick Foye, an appointee of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, sent the following email to officials of the agency ordering a halt to closures of Fort Lee, N.J., access lanes to the George Washington Bridge:</p> 
<p> From: Foye, Patrick</p> 
<p> Date: September 13, 2013, 7:44:29 AM EDT</p> 
<p> To: Fulton, Cedrick; Durando, Robert; Baroni,Bill; Dunne,Joseph P.; Koumoutsos, Louis; Zipf, Peter; Samson, David; Rechler, Scott; Buchbinder, Darrell</p> 
<p> Subject: Fort Lee eastbound access to GWB</p> 
<p> After reading last night's media pendings, I made inquiries and received calls on this matter which is very troubling. Here is what I learned: reversing over 25 years of PA GWB operations, the three lanes in Fort Lee eastbound to the GWB were reduced to one lane on Monday of this week without notifying Fort Lee, the commuting public we serve, the ED [executive director] or Media. A decision of this magnitude should be made only after careful deliberation and upon sign off by the ED. Reports are that Fort Lee has experienced severe traffic delays engulfing the entire Fort Lee area since Monday. I am appalled by the lack of process, failure to inform our customers and Fort Lee and most of all by the dangers created to the public interest, so I am reversing this decision now effective as soon as TBT [the authority's Tunnels, Bridges &amp; Terminals division] and PAPD [Port Authority police] tell me it is safe to do so today.</p> 
<p> I am making this decision for the following reasons:</p> 
<p> 1. This hasty and ill-advised decision has resulted in delays to emergency vehicles. I pray that no life has been lost or trip of a hospital- or hospice-bound patient delayed.</p> 
<p> 2. This hasty and ill-advised decision has undoubtedly had an adverse effect on economic activity in both states. That is contrary to the directive we have from our Governors to do everything possible to create jobs in both States.</p> 
<p> 3. I will not allow this hasty and ill-advised decision to delay the travels of those observing Yom Kippur tonight or the holidays to follow.</p> 
<p> 4. I believe this hasty and ill-advised decision violates Federal Law and the laws of both States.</p> 
<p> To be clear, I will get to the bottom of this abusive decision which violates everything this agency stands for; I intend to learn how PA process was wrongfully subverted and the public interest damaged to say nothing of the credibility of this agency.</p> 
<p> Finally, I am open to considering changes to each of our facilities if there is a case to be made that change will benefit the public interest. In the case of the Fort Lee eastbound access lanes, approval of this action will require:</p> 
<p> 1. Written sign off by TBT, Traffic Engineering and PAPD. That sign off was not sought or obtained here.</p> 
<p> 2. Prior discussion with the local government and a communication plan and plenty of advance notice to the commuting public. That did not occur here.</p> 
<p> 3. Consideration of the effects on emergency vehicles and sign off by PAPD. That did not occur here.</p> 
<p> 4. Consideration of the financial impact on the PA in terms of O/T. That too did not occur here.</p> 
<p> Cedric and Bob -- please let this group know when access to three lanes in Fort Lee can be restored as soon as possible today. This is a matter of public safety and time is of the essence.</p>

PA chief Patrick Foye's email on George Washington Bridge closures

<p> Bridget Anne Kelly was Gov. Chris Christie's deputy chief of staff for legislative and intergovernmental affairs. Her Aug. 13 email saying "time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee" buttressed allegations that September lane closures on George Washington Bridge approaches were politically motivated. Christie fired Kelly, who has worked for him since 2010, on Thursday.</p> 
<p> David Wildstein, a Christie appointee to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, received the Kelly email and responded: "Got it." Wildstein resigned last month and invoked the Fifth Amendment Thursday when questioned by a legislative committee in Trenton.</p> 
<p> Bill Stepien managed Christie's campaigns for governor in 2009 and 2013. Christie said the electronic messages showed him displaying "callous indifference" over the impact of the traffic scheme. Christie ordered Stepien to end his bid to become state GOP chairman and his consultant contract with the Republican Governors Association.</p> 
<p> Bill Baroni was Christie's appointee as deputy director of the Port Authority. He resigned last month. Baroni told New Jersey lawmakers that the lane closures were part of a traffic study.</p> 
<p> Patrick Foye, appointed by New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo as executive director of the Port Authority in 2011, testified he was unaware of a traffic study. He ordered the lane closures stopped after days of massive traffic jams.</p> 
<p> Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat, was supposedly the political target of the traffic tie-ups because he had declined to endorse Christie in his re-election campaign for governor.</p>

New Jersey traffic scandal: A who's who

<p> A one-time deputy chairman of the Long Island Power Authority has emerged as a key player in reversing efforts by members of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's administration to snarl traffic on the George Washington Bridge in September.</p> 
<p> Published reports say Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York &amp; New Jersey, in September directed staff to lift closures on two of the three lanes connecting Fort Lee, N.J., to the bridge that had been ordered shut by Christie associates, purportedly to study traffic patterns.</p> 
<p> Email documents released Wednesday suggest a top Christie aide arranged the traffic jams from Sept. 9 to 12&nbsp; to punish Fort Lee's Democratic mayor, Mark Sokolich, for not endorsing Christie for re-election last year. Christie Thursday apologized for the traffic jam, fired Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly and said he had "no knowledge or involvement" in a possible dirty trick that is now under federal investigation.</p> 
<p> Foye, a longtime resident of Port Washington, was appointed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to lead the Port Authority in October 2011. He previously served as Cuomo's deputy secretary for economic development. Before that, Foye was deputy county executive under Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and served on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board. He was also downstate chief of the state Empire State Development Corp. under former Gov. Eliot Spitzer.</p> 
<p> New York and New Jersey share administration of the bridge.</p> 
<p> In a Sept. 13 email to top Port Authority officials, Foye blasted the lane closures as "abusive," and noted their potentially dire consequences for patients being rushed to hospitals, according to The Wall Street Journal. Foye reportedly vowed to uncover how Port Authority procedures were "wrongfully subverted and the public interest damaged" by the lane closures, the Journal said.</p> 
<p> Foye didn't return a call seeking comment Thursday. A Port Authority spokesman didn't return a call.</p> 
<p> Foye's appointment to the Port Authority followed a series of high-level public appointments after a successful career as a partner at a Manhattan law firm. He previously was president and chief executive of United Way of Long Island, and led law firm Skadden Arps' mergers and acquisitions practice, as well as overseeing its operations in Brussels, Budapest and Moscow. Foye earned his law degree from Fordham Law School.</p>

Former LIPA deputy chairman key to reversing GW Bridge closing

<p>WASHINGTON -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took the right steps Thursday with a nearly two-hour news conference and cutting loose two key aides to respond to the growing scandal over the George Washington Bridge lane closures, politicians and analysts said.</p>
<p>But Christie's political future -- and his anticipated run to become the Republican candidate for president in 2016 -- depend on what other information emerges in the days ahead and how he handles it, they said.</p>
<p>"You have to accept what he says as being true," said Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), who's worked with Christie on regional issues and is exploring his own run for the White House. </p>
<p>But King added, "Going forward, he will either be vindicated or he's in trouble."</p>
<p>Political analyst John J. Pitney Jr. of Claremont McKenna College in California agreed.</p>
<p>"Christie gave himself a breather. If no new revelations emerge -- a big 'if' -- then this story will fade," Pitney said.</p>
<p>But the story could become disqualifying for his future prospects, Pitney said, "if it turns out that Christie did know the details all along."</p>
<p>Even if Christie is not implicated but more of his top aides are, he could face questions about his judgment in hiring staff, Pitney said.</p>
<p>Christie faces weeks, if not months, of internal, legislative and U.S. attorney's investigations -- as well as more digging by reporters -- that could turn up new evidence. </p>
<p>He also faces a steady drumbeat by his political foes, both within the Republican Party and from Democrats, that he's a petty, vindictive bully.</p>
<p>"This has been very damaging, but two years is a long time in politics -- it's many lifetimes in politics," said strategist Michael Dawidziak of Bohemia, who has worked on several Republican presidential campaigns over the years.</p>
<p>"The problem with this [scandal] is that it tarnishes the brand he built: the guy who's on top of things, the straight talker," Dawidziak said.</p>
<p>Already, the Democratic National Committee is fundraising off the scandal, emailing a video to supporters depicting Christie as a self-serving bully.</p>
<p>New York GOP chairman Ed Cox praised Christie's performance in the news conference.</p>
<p>"He has passed his test here with flying colors," said Cox, who was in Washington to attend a commemoration of the 101st birthday of his late father-in-law, President Richard Nixon.</p>
<p>"With respect to this crisis itself, there are going to be ongoing tests," he said.</p>
<p>"There will be a lot of unfair things that will come out, no doubt," Cox said, blaming Democrats. "It will all depend on how he reacts."</p>

Andrew M. Cuomo.</p> 
<p> “We get along quite well,” Republican Christie said of his Democrat neighbor. He said there are always “tensions” between New York and New Jersey over common issues including transportation between the states. The two states share oversight of the Port Authority, which oversees metro New York bridges and tunnels.</p> 
<p> &nbsp;“When issues have been raised … we have always, between the two of us, resolved it amicably and been able to move on,” Christie said.</p> 
<p> Weeks ago, Cuomo had said he was taking Christie at his word on the issue. Christie at the time said he knew nothing of any political payback scheme.</p>

As Christie apologizes, he says relations with Cuomo good

<p> New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Thursday apologized for days of traffic jams apparently orchestrated by aides and appointees as political vengeance, fired one of them and said he had "no knowledge or involvement" in a possible dirty trick that is now under federal investigation.</p> 
<p> Christie, a possible 2016 Republican presidential contender, declared "I am not a bully" during an epic news conference that ran almost two hours on Thursday. He said he first learned Wednesday that top aides had lied to him about the George Washington Bridge lane closings and said "abject stupidity" and "indifference" to the public was not typical of his administration.</p> 
<p> "I was blindsided," Christie said at the State House in Trenton, adding he was "embarrassed and humiliated." Christie, who had ridiculed the allegations over the September road closings in Fort Lee when questioned by reporters last month, admitted that "unwittingly . . . I said something that was untrue."</p> 
<p> "I am responsible for what happened. I am sad to report to the people of New Jersey that we fell short," he said.</p> 
<p> Christie said he had fired Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly "because she lied to me" when he asked senior aides a month ago whether they were involved in the lane closings that paralyzed Fort Lee, a borough of 35,000 on the west side of the bridge.</p> 
<p> Email documents released Wednesday suggest Kelly arranged the traffic jams to punish Fort Lee's Democratic mayor, Mark Sokolich, because he did not endorse Christie for re-election last year.<br> Christie Thursday also instructed Bill Stepian, his campaign manager, to withdraw from pursuing the state GOP chairmanship and his consultant job with the Republican Governors Association, which Christie heads.</p> 
<p> Christie said he was disturbed by the "callous indifference" displayed in the emails by Stepien, who called the mayor "an idiot."</p> 
<p> In Trenton, another Christie appointee, David Wildstein, a former top executive at the Port Authority who allegedly ordered the lane closures, asserted his Fifth Amendment rights more than two dozen times in refusing to answer questions at a legislative hearing Thursday. The committee found him in contempt.</p> 
<p> Authorities announced several probes into the controversy. The U.S. attorney in New Jersey, Paul Fishman, said he was "reviewing the matter to determine whether a federal law was implicated." Christie, a former U.S. attorney himself, said the internal probe he launched Wednesday was continuing. The Port Authority's inspector general is also investigating.</p> 
<p> The widening scandal threatened to upend Christie's second term, fuel questions about the governor's leadership and temperament and his claim to be a new kind of bipartisan Republican who reaches across the aisle. Christie rejected the notion that his often-combative tone encouraged his aides' behavior.</p> 
<p> Christie repeatedly stressed how "sad" he was by what he called the betrayal of some of his closest aides.</p> 
<p> "What did I do wrong to have these folks think it was OK to lie to me?" he asked. He said he had done much "soul-searching" over the past two days. "I'm sick over this."</p> 
<p> He said he first learned of the emails at about 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, shortly after he had finished a workout with his personal trainer, and was about to shower. His communications director called to say the story had just broken on a newspaper website. Christie read it on his iPad.</p> 
<p> "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee," Kelly wrote in August in a message to Wildstein, a top Christie appointee on the Port Authority.</p> 
<p> "Got it," Wildstein replied.</p> 
<p> A few weeks later, Wildstein closed two of three lanes connecting Fort Lee to the heavily traveled bridge.</p> 
<p> The lane closures caused massive traffic jams, affecting not just traffic across the Hudson River into Manhattan but spilling over into Fort Lee, too. The Record newspaper reported that paramedics were delayed in reaching an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died of cardiac arrest.</p> 
<p> On the fifth day, officials from New York ordered the lanes reopened, easing the flow over a section of Interstate 95 that the Port Authority calls the busiest bridge in the world.</p> 
<p> Fort Lee's Sokolich called it "appalling" that the traffic jams appear to have been deliberately created.<br> Late Thursday afternoon, Christie went to Fort Lee to apologize to Sokolich in person. Sokolich emerged from the meeting and said he accepted Christie's apology.</p> 
<p> "I take him at his word, which is that he had nothing to do with it," Sokolich said.</p>

N.J. Gov. Chris Christie: I'm 'embarrassed and humiliated' by aides' actions in traffic jam case

<p> Thanks to the staff of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for drawing us such a jaw-droppingly vivid picture of Port Authority dysfunction.</p> 
<p> It came at exactly the right moment -- as Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that, after decades of Port Authority neglect, New York would step in and remodel key parts of Kennedy and LaGuardia airports itself.</p> 
<p> The bistate agency has always had a reputation as a bottomless patronage pit and blunt political instrument. And that rap was validated Wednesday by a damaging email trail about the closing of the Fort Lee access lanes of the George Washington Bridge that led dangerously close to the door of the governor's office in Trenton. It unfolded just as Cuomo was spelling out why his office was taking direct oversight of the renovations to Kennedy and JFK.</p> 
<p> Under the Port Authority's management, NYC airports are consistently ranked among the world's worst. That's embarrassing and inexcusable. The central passenger terminal at LaGuardia, the only one owned by the Port Authority, is about as modern as a 1958 four-engine Lockheed Constellation. And over at the aging JFK cargo complex, volume has fallen by a third over the last decade. In his State of the State speech, Cuomo revealed his impatience with the authority's slow pace in rebuilding both.</p> 
<p> Meanwhile, on the other side of the river, the emails revealed that a top aide to the governor signaled Christie's political appointees at the authority to go ahead with creating a horrific four-day traffic jam in Fort Lee, presumably to punish the city's mayor for not endorsing Christie's re-election. The phrase "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee" is the new code for political dirty tricks.</p> 
<p> Christie, who has denied involvement and had dismissed the incident as merely a study of traffic patterns, said Wednesday he would hold anyone involved accountable. He should start by demanding the resignation of his top appointee, David Sampson, chairman of the Port Authority.</p> 
<p> While the authority always had problems taking care of business in New York, now we know it is clearly good at carrying out political vendettas in New Jersey.</p>
