Not 10 days after Election Day in 2010, the new governor-elect, Andrew M. Cuomo, was so concerned about protracted recounts of State Senate races that he fired off a letter to the state's top judge, Jonathan Lippman, asking the courts to resolve matters quickly.

"A state Senate in limbo is not only undesirable, but also unacceptable," Cuomo wrote at the time.

Flash forward two years. Senate control again appears to hinge on a crucial recount that could last well into December. But this time, there's been no urgent letter from Cuomo.

Maybe one isn't necessary. Four breakaway Democrats have hinted they might join with Republicans to keep the GOP in power. Which would mean there's no limbo after all.-- Yancey Roy
