Cuomo watch: Microstamp of approval
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo speaks in favor of microstamping technology for firearms. "I believe it could have an impact on crime," he said last week at a news conference. "I support it. The Legislature doesn't want to pass it."
Actually, the Democratic-controlled Assembly approved a micro-stamping bill sponsored by Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck) in four of the past five legislative sessions. The measure then died in the Senate -- mostly under the Republican majority, but once with the Democrats in charge, in 2010.
Microstamping is a controversial technology that imprints markings on shell casings. When guns are fired in crimes, its supporters say, the markings would help law enforcement identify the weapons used. Opponents question its effectiveness and cost.-- Ted Phillips
