Authorities say sheriff's deputies had to break a car window to rescue a 1-year-old baby whose mother had left her child in the vehicle as she shopped in a western New York store.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office says someone called 911 after noticing a baby inside a car parked at the Dollar General in the town of Newstead, 20 miles east of Buffalo. Temperatures were in the high 70s at the time.

A deputy who arrived on the scene noticed the boy was sweating and looked distressed, so he smashed one of the vehicle's windows.

The child was treated at the scene and didn't need to go the hospital.

The boy's 24-year-old mother was charged with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17-years-old. Police notified county Child Protective Services.
