New York is starting to deploy National Guard troops and additional police to beef up security at major transit points and other locations in response to a heightened threat of terrorism.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, accompanied by state lawmakers, says Friday it's already under way and likely to last months, but isn't in response to any specific threat.

A formal announcement with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is planned next week.

Officials say New York City has been the target of terrorism before, is a likely to be targeted again, and the measures are precautions.

Cuomo says the increased security will be visible, and it will cost tens of millions of dollars in the short term.
