NJ lawmakers back new law to aid missing children
An Essex County Democrat is the latest New Jersey lawmaker to introduce a version of "Caylee's Law," named after the Florida toddler whose mother was just acquitted of murdering her.
Casey Anthony didn't report her daughter missing for more than a month. Her trial was covered extensively on cable television.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo's bill requires parents to report missing children within 12 hours.
Sen. Nick Sacco and Assemblyman John Wisniewski (wis-nes-KEE) are sponsoring legislation making it a felony not to report a death or to wait more than a day before telling authorities a child has gone missing.
Meanwhile, Assembly Republicans Domenick DiCicco (dee-CHEE-ko), John Amodeo (om-uh-DAY-oh) and Vince Polistina's (pol-is-TEE-noh) bill strengthens penalties for failing to report a missing child.
At least 16 states have introduced a Caylee's Law.
