Pentagon investigated West Point superintendent

WEST POINT -- The Pentagon's inspector general looked into an allegation of an improper relationship by the U.S. Military Academy's superintendent, but the claim was never substantiated, the Army said Monday.

The Army did not comment on a Washington Post report that the inspector general upheld an unspecified misconduct allegation against Superintendent Lt. Gen. David H. Huntoon.

The newspaper, citing documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, reported on the investigation Saturday.

The inspector general's investigation occurred last year and Huntoon has no pending disciplinary action against him, George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, told The Associated Press.

"Lieutenant General David Huntoon plans to retire this summer after 40 years of honorable and distinguished service," Wright said in an email.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Defense's inspector general says she can't comment on whether Huntoon was investigated. Spokeswoman Bridget Serchak said reports of investigations that substantiate senior official misconduct are made available through the Freedom of Information Act.

Huntoon graduated from West Point in 1973 and became the 58th superintendent of the venerable academy on the Hudson River in July 2010.

Huntoon had been director of the Army Staff in Washington, D.C. He was involved in Operation Desert Storm and was commandant of the U.S. Army War College.
