General Mills recalls more than 725,000 Pillsbury rolls for possible glass contamination

Food giant General Mills has recalled more than 4,200 cases of Pillsbury frozen roll dough — more than 725,000 Kaiser and bread rolls in all — due to possible glass contamination, the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have confirmed.

The voluntary recall was instituted by General Mills on June 19, but was only confirmed by the USFDA in an enforcement report issued Monday.

The recall involves frozen rolls that are pre-made and packaged to bake at on-site locations. They were sold exclusively at in-store bakeries at Walmart. The cases were distributed to Walmart stores in New York and 18 other states across the U.S., from Maine to California.

In a statement Friday, General Mills stressed the products have already been removed from destination stores.

According to notices available from the USFDA, the recall included 3,08 cases of Pillsbury Hard Roll Dough, each containing 180 rolls and enough to bake more than 554,000 rolls. It also included 1,260 cases of Kaiser Roll Dough, each containing 144 rolls and enough to bake more than 180,000 rolls.

In preparation, stores using the rolls would defrost and proof them ahead of a reheat or bake in order to offer them for sale.

The USFDA enforcement report indicates the frozen roll dough was produced in June and had best use dates in October.

The USFDA did not indicate what might've led to the potential contamination.

In a statement Friday to Newsday, General Mills said: "Food safety is our top priority at General Mills. Out of an abundance of caution, in mid-June, we issued a voluntary recall of two frozen dough products baked onsite and sold exclusively at Walmart in-store bakeries in the United States. This voluntary recall is limited in scope, highly contained, and all potentially impacted product has been removed."
