A 32-year-old central New York man is in jail after police say he received 12 pounds of marijuana in the mail.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says Robert C. Cardillo Jr. of Rome picked up a package last week at a post office in the town of New Hartford, outside Utica.

Officials say the package contained more than 12 pounds of pot with a street value of about $50,000.

Cardillo was charged with was charged June 5 with felony criminal possession of marijuana.

He has been released from the county jail after posting bail. It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer.

The county Drug Enforcement Task Force was assisted by the U.S. Postal Inspector Service and New Hartford police to investigate drugs being received through the mail.
