ALBANY — State troopers are investigating two of their own high-ranking members over allegations of using police credentials to gain special access at the recent Ryder Cup golf event at Bethpage Black in September, officials said Tuesday.

The probe centers on Deputy Superintendent R. Christopher West and Col. Darren Pitkin, the troopers' field commander, according to the Times Union of Albany, which first reported the investigation.

The agency, in a statement issued through its Albany headquarters, confirmed the probe:

"Superintendent (Steven G.) James has ordered an immediate investigation into actions taken by some executive staff members in relation to gaining admission to the Ryder Cup for themselves and family members. The superintendent has asked for the resignation of two executive staff members involved. Integrity is the cornerstone of the State Police, and all allegations of misconduct will be thoroughly investigated."

The two executives are expected to file for retirement in the coming days, a source said.

The Albany newspaper reported it had obtained photographs of West and other high-ranking troopers at VIP areas of the golf tournament, held Sept. 26-28. It also reported the alleged misuse occurred during tournament play, as opposed to practice rounds.

James was tapped by Gov. Kathy Hochul in February 2024 to become the new superintendent. On his first day, he enacted the most significant immediate department shake-up in recent history, removing four top officers and appointing seven new deputy superintendents. One of those deputies was West.
