St. John the Baptist junior Mark Reilly won the CHSAA individual championship on Thursday, defeating Chaminade’s Luke Koskovolis in a sudden-death playoff. Both Reilly and Koskovolis shot a one-over 73 at Eisenhower Red, forcing the tiebreaker on a par-5 hole which Reilly birdied for the win.

St. Anthony’s won the team championship with a score of 378, barely edging out defending champion Chaminade, which finished with 384. Chaminade had previously won the league title four years in a row.

“It feels great,” first-year coach Alex Conlon said. “The guys played well all season and they played great today. We had a really strong team this year.”

Conlon said the score didn’t surprise him because he expected the match to be close, and he said the Friars have thrived under pressure all year.

“They are gritty kids who had to tough it out every match all season, and that’s exactly what they did today,” he said.

St. Anthony’s, which went 11-1 and won the regular season championship, will send seven golfers to the CHSAA State Championships: Chris Sabanos (74), Kyle Cunningham (75), John Schob (76), Ross Ketner (76), Travis Ricca (77), Matt Windmiller (79), and Robert Jensen (79).

A total of 16 golfers qualified Wednesday for the state tournament, which will be played on June 1 at James Baird State Park in Pleasant Valley.
