Renovated Kings Park library to open tomorrow

The Kings Park public library will reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday — completing a $21 million project to upgrade the Smithtown library system’s four branches.

The Smithtown Special Library District announced Monday it had received permits to open the expanded library, at 1 Church St.

Space at the branch increased by 25 percent with a two-story, 3,000-square-foot addition. The building also added new elevators, energy-efficient lighting and windows, and upgraded heating and ventilation systems since it was closed last year for renovations.

Voters in 2008 approved a $21 million referendum to renovate the Smithtown, Kings Park and Commack branches, and build a new Nesconset branch. The Commack and Nesconset branches reopened last year, and Smithtown reopened last month.

Formal ceremonies to reopen the Smithtown and Kings Park branches are to be held later, the library district said in a news release.
