Report on Carmans River plan nearly done

Brookhaven planning officials are nearing completion of a report assessing the town’s strategy for protecting the Carmans River watershed.
The report, a state-mandated final environmental impact statement, is expected to be posted on the town website by the beginning of next week, said town planning director Tullio Bertoli.
The assessment is expected to include the town’s responses to comments from residents about a draft environmental impact statement that was released this summer.
The town’s Carmans River Conservation and Management Plan calls for town acquisition of various parcels along the 10-mile river and new zoning to restrict development. The town board has scheduled an Oct. 15 vote on adopting the plan.
Bertoli, at a town board work session on Thursday, said the plan has been revised since a July 30 public hearing, but he did not elaborate. Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said last month the plan would include revisions to proposals for reducing the flow of nitrates into the river.
Bertoli said the revised plan might be posted on the town website soon after the environmental impact statement.
