Riverhead GOP tension comes to a head

After weeks of trying to smooth out a possible fight over who will get to run for Riverhead supervisor on the GOP line, party officials have scheduled their designating convention for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1239 East Main St.
The nominating convention, initially scheduled for earlier this week, was postponed.
Incumbent Sean Walter wants to run again, and has threatened to run a primary if he is not chosen. Town board member Jim Wooten has also screened for the nomination and insists that if he does not get it, he should be allowed to undergo screening to seek re-election to the town board.
Other Republicans have expressed interest in running for one of two open town board seats.
Meanwhile, the town’s Democrats will meet Monday night at 7 p.m. at the General Store in Wading River to pick their candidates. Former Supervisor Phil Cardinale is one of several people who have screened for the supervisor endorsement, party officials said.
