The Riverhead Free Library was closed Tuesday after a bedbug-sniffing dog identified several places around the building that might have bedbugs.

Library director Lisa Jacobs said the dog was brought in after reports that other public buildings and libraries were infested with bedbugs. She said that after the dog's initial findings, the building was immediately closed for today and tomorrow as a precaution.

An exterminator has since found no evidence of bedbugs after more than an hour of searching the library, Jacobs said.

The exterminator is setting bedbug-attracting dry ice traps around the library and will check tomorrow to see if things are safe, Jacobs said. "We were really shocked, initially, at what the dog apparently found."

The library will be closed on Thursday, as scheduled, for Thanksgiving.
