New blue waves are breaking over the Riverhead High School softball dugout, courtesy of a former Mount Sinai art teacher who lives in the district, her daughter and the daughter’s friend.

Susan Kent, the retired teacher, takes her daughter, Leia, to cheerleading practice, and parks near the dugout, which Leia and her friend, Catherine Brophy, agreed could use some brightening up.

The three of them proposed a design — Blue Waves is the nickname of the school’s teams — and added an artistic touch by painting two bats in a “V” shape in the middle of the word “WAVES.”
