The Riverhead Animal Shelter will hold its first-ever pet adoption fair Saturday.

A dozen dogs will be available, and no fee will be charged. All the dogs have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and have had microchips implanted.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter, at 532 Youngs Ave.

The town does a background check on people interested in adopting the animals to determine if they have ever been charged with animal cruelty or, if they rent their homes, if they’re allowed to keep pets.
