Road to be renamed after late GOP leader

A county road in Southampton Town will soon be dedicated in honor of Edwin M. “Buzz” Schwenk, who led the Suffolk Republican Party for a decade in the 1960s and ’70s.
Schwenk, who became Suffolk GOP leader in 1967 and stepped down in 1977, died in December 2009 at age 86.
Suffolk Legis. Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) will lead the May 6 dedication of a 5-mile stretch of County Road 39 in Schwenk’s honor. The road will be named Edwin M. “Buzz” Schwenk Memorial Highway, a spokeswoman for Schneiderman said.
In a statement, Schneiderman said he wanted “to show my sincere respect and admiration for Edwin “Buzz” Schwenk and his dedication, efforts and commitment to the residents of the county.”
Schwenk led the party at a time when Republicans owned every seat in both the county Legislature and Suffolk’s Albany delegation. He was also convicted in 1981 of federal tax evasion charges and spent 60 days in jail.
The dedication ceremony will take place 11 a.m. at the northwest corner of the intersection of County Road 39 and David Whites Lane.
