The Center for Science Teaching and Learning in Rockville Centre was recently awarded a $23,000 grant from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation for a new program that encourages learning between underserved middle school kids and their parents.

The Parents as Learning Partners program will provide parents with the opportunity to engage in science activities with their children, help them understand the importance of science in everyday life, and expose them to possible careers in science and technology. The program will cover topics such as health and wellness, the environment and technology, organizers said.

“Today’s society doesn’t realize all that science does and how it is a part of everyday life,” said CSTL president Ray Ann Havasy, who founded the nonprofit in 2000. “This grant will enable parents to see how science is everywhere and therefore encourage their kids to learn more about it.”

Children’s parents will be notified through school districts of the new program set to start in spring 2012. It will be available on a first-come, first-served basis once districts are notified. Notifications will go out at the end of January, organizers said.
