Rockville Centre seeks youth volunteers

Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray and a group of parent volunteers are looking for teenagers to join the village’s Youth Task Force, that helps with community service projects.

The task force is open to village residents in grades 7 through 12, officials said. Volunteers must commit to 36 hours a year for such jobs as cleaning the downtown business district and the playing fields, planting and weeding in designated areas, coordinating food drives and providing after-school tutoring and mentoring.

“We hope to become a clearinghouse, linking committed youth volunteers to worthwhile community service projects,” Bridget Kelly, a program coordinator, said in a statement.

Murray, in the same statement, said the mission of the task force “is to encourage community pride and community service in our young adults.”

The task force is also reaching out to schools, religious organizations, and not-for-profit agencies for community service projects suitable for the volunteers.
