Rocky Point's Wood throws no-hitter
Junior Mike Wood threw the first no-hitter of his career as Rocky Point defeated Miller Place, 8-0, yesterday in a Suffolk League VI baseball game.
Wood walked the first batter of the game and after a walk in the fourth, he retired the game's final 12 batters.
Newfield 7, East Islip 6: Nick Dicono won it with a walk-off, solo home run in the seventh for Newfield (5-3) in League III. Dan Merola went 2-for-3 with a home run for the Wolverines.
Centereach 8, West Islip 7: Tyler Bowne drove in Nick Lucciani with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Centereach (3-2) in League III. Andrew Abreu was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
BOYS LACROSSEFarmingdale 6, Hicksville 5:Sal Tuttle scored his fourth goal of the game with 36 seconds left and Hayden Kirk (13 saves) made a stop with four seconds remaining to give visiting Farmingdale a 6-5 win over Hicksville in a Nassau Conference I boys lacrosse game yesterday.
Greg Catalano tied the score at 5 with 1:28 remaining off an assist from Tuttle for the Dalers (4-0). Joe Leonard scored with 2:48 left to give Hicksville (3-1) a 5-4 lead.Baldwin 12, Oceanside 11: Max Malinowski scored on a pass from Troy Dennis with five seconds left in regulation to win it for Baldwin (3-1). Kyle Rebman tied the score at 11 with 2:54 remaining in the fourth quarter for Baldwin, which trailed 10-6 at the start of the frame. Billy Deignan won 19-of-25 faceoffs for Baldwin.
Hewlett 5, Bethpage 4:Jake Posner scored with 26 seconds left in triple overtime on a feed from Chris Loria for Hewlett (2-0) in Conference B-II. Sam Morterella scored early in the fourth to put Hewlett ahead 4-3. Bethpage tied the score with 10 minutes left.
West Babylon 6, Lindenhurst 5:Scott Harz (three goals) scored with three minutes left in the third overtime for West Babylon (5-4) in Division I. Lindenhurst's Chris Ciazza scored with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 5. Ryan Quinn made 15 saves for WB.
East Islip 9, Smithtown East 8:Kevin Hutchinson had three goals and two assists and scored with 6:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to put East Islip (5-1) ahead 9-6. Mike Rooney added two goals and one assist.
West Islip 13, Smithtown West 3:Nick Galasso had five goals and two assists and Rob Moore added three goals for West Islip (6-1). Kyle Turri had 11 saves for the Lions.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Miller Place 11, Comsewogue 10: Taylor Reh scored five goals, including the winner with 49 seconds remaining on a feed from Danielle Abad for Miller Place (5-1) in Division II.
Rocky Point 16, Sayville 9:Kara Mupo had six goals and one assist, Caitlin Garden had four goals and three assists and Julie Nolan made nine saves for Rocky Point (6-0) in a rematch of the 2009 county Class B final. Samantha Mazzeo had three goals for Rocky Point in her first game this season after returning from an ACL injury.
Babylon 7, Kings Park 6:Shelby Fredericks (two goals, two assists) scored on an isolation play with seven minutes remaining to give Babylon (5-2) a 7-5 lead. Julie Piccione added three goals and an assist.
Harborfields 13, Bayport-Blue Point 10:Bridget Greene had five goals and an assist and Kelsey Margey added two goals and three assists for Harborfields (4-2).
Hauppauge 13, Islip 11:Taylor Ranftle scored four goals and had four draw controls and Julide Giray had six ground balls for Hauppauge (5-1).
Bellmore JFK 12, Herricks 11:Kerri Baum scored her fifth goal of the game to give Bellmore JFK a 12-9 lead with six minutes left in Conference IV. Dana Destasio (19 saves) made three stops in the final 30 seconds after Herricks scored two goals with under two minutes left to pull within one goal. Morgan Kitton won 13 faceoffs for Bellmore JFK. Alli Richutti scored five goals for Herricks.Valley Stream Central 16, Great Neck North 14: Samantha Saad scored 30 seconds into the first overtime for Valley Stream Central (7-0) in Conference V. Saad scored two overtime goals for VSC, which scored four goals in the two overtime periods. Catherine Powell had four goals and one assist for VSC. Molly Levy scored with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime for GNN (5-2).
