Rooney Mara is the early betting favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in “Carol,” a feat that presumably would make her the first great-granddaughter of the founders of two NFL franchises to win an acting Oscar.

But her recent nomination alone bodes well for the Steelers, founded by her maternal great-grandfather, Art Rooney Sr. Thus far every time she has been nominated for an Oscar, one of her family’s teams has won the Super Bowl.

The last time, as Best Actress for the 2011 film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the Giants of her paternal great-grandfather Tim Mara won it all.

That winter, the Giants and Ms. Mara faced similarly formidable opponents. The Giants upset theirs, defeating the Patriots, 21-17, to win Super Bowl XLVI.

Mara later lost to the Academy Awards’ version of the Patriots: Meryl Streep.

The Steelers’ Super Bowl 50 quest got tougher on Friday, though, when the team ruled top receiver Antonio Brown out for Sunday’s NFL divisional playoff game against Denver.
