Roslyn country club, town work on pact

The Roslyn Country Club property owner and Town of North Hempstead officials have started discussions about the future of the club, potentially avoiding having the town seizing it.

The club is in the heart of a 668-home Levitt & Sons Inc. development and was open for decades to community members. It includes a pool and tennis courts, which have been closed about five years, and a catering hall, which is open.

Earlier this year, the town floated the idea of seizing the property and turning it into a fee-based membership park for residents.

Owner Manouchehr “Manny” Malekan and the town have now agreed that the catering facility will not be part of negotiations.

“I do believe we are reaching some sort of solution,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said during a sometimes contentious town board public hearing about the issue Tuesday night.

Some residents criticized the town for not releasing details of any purchase. Kaiman said it was premature given that negotiations are ongoing.

The Roslyn Country Club mansion is open and serves as a catering facility. The pool and tennis courts have been shuttered for years and trees are growing up through the courts. (Sept. 27, 2011)
