Ross has 4 RBIs as Red Sox beat Rays

Cody Ross homered and drove in four runs, Felix Doubront won his third consecutive start and the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-3, Thursday night.

Ross extended Boston's lead to 5-2 on a two-run single off reliever Wade Davis with two outs in the eighth.

"I was going after this game tonight," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "The guys really wanted this game, and I was just going to do everything we could to win it. Just frustration [from Wednesday's loss], and we wanted to get back into the winning ways."

Doubront (4-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Alfredo Aceves, the fifth Boston reliever, got four outs for his eighth save. Matt Moore (1-4) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings for Tampa Bay, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Orioles 5, Royals 3: Adam Jones hit a two-run homer and J.J. Hardy also drove in a pair of runs as Baltimore won its seventh straight on the road.

Athletics 5, Rangers 4: Kila Ka'aihue had a tiebreaking single in the 10th, and visiting Oakland bounced back from a disputed call on a squeeze play that cost them the lead.

Twins 4, Tigers 3: Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer in his second game back from a wrist injury for visiting Minnesota.

White Sox 6, Angels 1: Chris Sale (4-2) pitched into the sixth for visiting Chicago.

Phillies 8, Cubs 7: Roy Halladay threw eight strong innings for his first victory in a month for visiting Philadelphia. Halladay (4-3) lost three straight decisions to match a career high, but held Chicago to three runs and seven hits. Carlos Ruiz had his sixth career four-hit game and drove in three runs as the Phillies won their fifth straight.

Braves 7, Marlins 0: Brandon Beachy (5-1) improved his major league-best ERA to 1.33 with a five-hitter for host Atlanta.

Giants 7, Cardinals 5: Brandon Crawford hit a two-run single for his first RBIs since April and San Francisco capitalized on shoddy fielding by St. Louis to give Matt Cain (3-2) support on a rare shaky day.-- AP
