WHAT Asylum Theatre Company presents "The Tempest" in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company's Open Stages Project. Part of a yearlong observance of Royal Shakespeare's 50th anniversary, Open Stages works with select regional theaters and amateur companies from around the globe, helping each to present its own RSC-branded production. "We want to open our doors and collaborate with amateur partners to leave a significant legacy," says Royal Shakespeare artistic director Michael Boyd. Director Valeri Lantz-Gefroh's surreal adaptation of "The Tempest," Shakespeare's last play, is one of the few productions from the United States accepted for Open Stages. "When conceiving this project, I took great liberties," says Lantz-Gefroh of Rocky Point. "Having watched my mother die six years ago, I was struck by a parallel between Shakespeare's final musings and the internal storm my mother waded through." Lantz-Gefroh is on the faculty of Stony Brook University. Her husband, Steven, a Suffolk County Community College professor, plays Prospero. The Lantz-Gefrohs co-founded Asylum Theatre.
