Ruling in unborn son's favor is ironic

The New York State appellate court's ruling that an unborn child can be considered to suffer an economic loss due to the wrongful death of his father ["Court allows son to sue for earnings," News, Dec. 9] is quite ironic if one thinks about it.
The decision holds that an unborn child, whose father is wrongfully killed while that child is in utero, can sue for monetary damages after birth, while U.S. Supreme Court rulings allow that same unborn child to be destroyed through abortion.
It seems that an unborn child is only considered to matter in our society if he or she suffers an economic loss, and not the loss of his or her life.
