Russell's squeeze gives Kings Park upset win
Sean Russell's squeeze in the top of the 12th inning drove in Nick Venier to break a scoreless tie and lead No. 6 Kings Park to an upset over No. 2 Islip, 3-0, yesterday in the winner's bracket of the Suffolk Class A semifinals.
Brandon Haney allowed four hits in nine innings and Chris Kalousian pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Islip's Edvardas Matusevicius pitched 111/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out 15. Chris Pyz added an RBI single with two outs in the 12th to provide the final margin. Kings Park (15-7) will play No. 5 Mount Sinai in the best-of-three finals beginning at 4 p.m. Friday at Kings Park.
Mount Sinai 6, Shoreham-Wading River 4: Artie Wellhausen, Dennis Shumer and Matt Esposito had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the seventh to give No. 5 Mt. Sinai (16-6) the upset over No. 1 Shoreham-Wading River in the Class A winner's bracket semifinals. Ian Schneider entered the bottom of the seventh with one on and nobody out and retired the final three batters for the save.
Longwood 3, Half Hollow Hills West 2: Bobby Gazzola hit a no-out, three-run walk-off home run to win it for No. 2 Longwood, 3-2, over No. 3 Hills West in the Suffolk Class AA winner's bracket semifinals. Danny Parisi singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Mario Parisi drew a walk before Gazzola hit the first pitch to left center. J.J. Bessel struck out 10, walked two and allowed one earned run in a five-hitter. Longwood (19-3) will play Lindenhurst at 4 p.m. Friday at Lindenhurst.
Lindenhurst 11, Bellport 3: Mike Roehrig went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, six RBIs and a stolen base and Rich Vrana improved to 7-0 and had 11 strikeouts to lead No. 1 Lindenhurst (21-1) past No. 12 Bellport in the Suffolk Class AA winner's bracket semifinals. Ward Melville 4, Sachem North 2: Nick Nunziato had a one-out RBI triple in the top of the eighth and scored on Alex Morhaim's infield single to give No. 8 Ward Melville (16-7) a 4-2 lead over No. 7 Sachem North in the Class AA loser's bracket semifinals. Mike Maurer struck out five, walked three and allowed five hits in eight innings. Ward Melville will host Bellport at 4 p.m. Thursday.Connetquot 17, Patchogue-Medford 11: Andrew Jaccino went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Mike Rizzitello had three hits and three RBIs to lead No. 9 Connetquot (16-8) in the third round of the Class AA loser's bracket. Connetquot plays at No. 3 Half Hollow Hills West at 4 p.m. Thursday.Sayville 6, Rocky Point 5: Steven Marsich's single drove in Richie Millwater with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead No. 3 Sayville (17-5) in the Class A loser's bracket game. Nick Mancuso pitched three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts to earn the win. Eddie Rupp added three hits. Rocky Point plays at No. 1 Shoreham-Wading River at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Hauppauge 6, Glenn 1: Bob Zitulano went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs and Matt Reistetter hit a two-run home run in the fourth for No. 4 Hauppauge (16-6) in a Class A loser's bracket game. Hauppauge plays at Islip at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
