Sachem North's boys swimming team graduated seven seniors, but their squad remains strong, coach Larry Saposnick said.

"The talent is spread out this year," Saposnick said." "I have a strong core and a handful of strong swimmers."

In their most recent meet, Sachem North defeated Lindenhurst 63-37.

Senior Derek Avila placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.75 and second in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.40.

"He's a strong senior," Saposnick said. "He's a good team leader and he's very nice to have around."

Speed demon Danny Cheng finished first in both the 100 freestyle (53.82 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1:59.24).

"He's my top sprinter and my speed guy this year," Saposnick said.

Despite losing many seniors, Saposnick said that his team consists of some young swimmers he's excited to watch compete.

Freshman Joe Pedifich was on the team last year as an eighth-grader. Against Lindenhurst, he finished first in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.03 and won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.17.

Sachem North's next meet is Thursday against Hauppauge.
