Regarding "A good deed in dreary winter" [News, Feb. 3]: I too experienced the goodness of teens. I had just begun shoveling my mailbox out of the 4-foot wall of snow placed there by the plowtruck. I was hating every minute of shoveling. The snow had hardened and was very heavy. I live near Sachem East High School, and teens walk by my home each day.

As I shoveled, a teenage young man walked over to me and requested I give him the shovel, and he told me to step back as he would shovel me out. I was really taken aback as I handed him the shovel. He shoveled more than I would have and did such a great job I reached in my pocket to pay him. He said, "I won't accept any money. Karma, you know." Just like the young men in the Valley Stream story.

The teen and his friends said they were walking to a local fast-food restaurant after school. This was a bit of a walk on a good day, and I told them I would drive them. The young man who shoveled smiled and said, "You see, karma."

Unfortunately, it seems as though the teens who choose the wrong path in life are the ones we all too often read or hear about.
