Nassau County Legis. Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick), the Association of the Community Parent Center and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will partner to bring the Driving in the Safe Lane program to the community.

The safe teen-driving program is designed to help reduce teen crashes. The program educates parents and new and prospective teen drivers about driving safely, state driving laws, and parental and driver responsibilities.

The 90-minute lecture program will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook Rd. in North Merrick.

Driving in the Safe Lane was launched in 2005 by the nonprofit Community Parent Center, based in North Merrick, in response to the growing problem of unsafe teen driving.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury and death among teenagers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk for motor vehicle crashes is higher for 16- to 19-year-olds than any other age group. Annually, 5,000 teens are killed and 300,000 are injured in auto crashes.

To register for the program or for more information, call Denenberg’s office at 516-571-6219. Registration is required.
