Sagamore Hill home of Teddy's son to get a facelift

Visitors to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site will soon see construction being done to the exterior of Old Orchard house, once home to Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the son of the former president.
Amy Verone, Sagamore Hill’s chief of cultural resources, said work will begin in December to improve and restore the building.
In the first phase, crews will renovate windows that have been in place since the house was built in 1938.
“Because they are historic, we don’t want to just replace them,” Verone said.
Crews will also reproduce the house’s original shutters, add storm windows to improve energy efficiency, restore the original look using lead-free paint and replace several doors, including the main entry door -- all while maintaining its historic appearance.
In phase two, the museum will clean and repoint the exterior mortar and dig up and repair the drainage system.
Phase one will cost an estimated $340,000. Verone said there is no estimate yet on how much the second phase will cost.
