Same-sex couple legal seminar in Great Neck
A Great Neck law firm is hosting a legal seminar for same-sex couples Aug. 16.
The 6 p.m. seminar at Wisselman, Harounian & Associates PC will focus on the rights and restrictions faced by same-sex couples.
Same-sex marriage became legal in New York on July 24, but many states and the federal government recognize unions only between one man and one woman.
Although same-sex couples in New York can file joint state tax returns and partake in a spouse’s health insurance, they must file separate federal tax returns and be taxed on spousal health benefits.
These and other topics relating to finances, joint parenting rights and health care decisions are scheduled to be discussed at the clinic.
“With progress and equality comes responsibility and the need to gain information and protection,” attorney Lauren Chartan said. “There are a myriad of additional issues that same-sex partners will need to become educated about.”
The free seminar will be held at the law firm’s offices, at 1010 Northern Blvd., Suite 300, in Great Neck.
