San Francisco Giants are first team to win protest filed with MLB since 1986
The San Francisco Giants yesterday became the first team since 1986 to win a protest filed with Major League Baseball, and will resume a rain-shortened game the Chicago Cubs thought they had won.
MLB executive Joe Torre ruled on Tuesday night's game at Wrigley Field that was called after 41/2 innings. The Cubs had been declared the winners by a 2-0 score.
Now, it is a suspended game that will resume at 4:05 p.m. today with the Cubs batting in the bottom of the fifth.
A short rainstorm caused a delay of more than 4 hours Tuesday after the grounds crew couldn't put the tarp down quickly. The umpires said the field was unplayable and called it at 1:16 a.m.
MLB ruled that the tarp had not been properly put away after its previous use and that, under the rules, there was a "malfunction of a mechanical field device under control of the home club."
Hours after they won the protest, Jake Peavy pitched seven solid innings in the Giants' 8-3 win over the Cubs.
Nationals 3, Diamondbacks 2: Pinch-hitter Anthony Rendon singled home Bryce Harper in the ninth as host Washington won its ninth straight
Cardinals 7, Reds 3: Jhonny Peralta hit a bases-clearing double as host St. Louis ended Johnny Cueto's winning streak at seven.
Pirates 3, Braves 2: Gaby Sanchez's sacrifice fly in the ninth enabled host Pittsburgh to snap a seven-game skid.
Angels 8, Red Sox 3: Josh Hamilton broke out of a slump with two hits and three RBIs for visiting Los Angeles but it was a costly win. Angels starter Garrett Richards sustained a patellar injury in his left knee while running to cover first base in the second inning and was taken off on a stretcher. The extent of the injury wasn't known.
Orioles 4, White Sox 3: Nelson Cruz his his 33rd home run as Baltimore posted its first sweep in Chicago July, 1995.
Tigers 6, Rays 0: Rick Porcello (14-8) pitched a three-hitter for his AL-leading third shutout for visiting Detroit.
Blue Jays 9, Brewers 5: Jose Bautista's three-run homer capped a five-run sixth for visiting Toronto.
Rockies 5, Royals 2: Matt McBride hit a grand slam for the host Rockies, who reduced the Royals' lead in the AL Central to one game over the Tigers.
Phillies 4, Mariners 3: Wil Nieves had three hits for host Philadelphia. -- AP
