School’s 9/11 garden to be rededicated

To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, students at Waverly Park School in Lynbrook will host a rededication of the school’s 9/11 Memorial Garden from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The garden was created in 2007 to honor the victims of 9/11 and to create a quiet place to read and enjoy nature.

Each year since, the school has added something new — plants, benches, a hand-painted mural and a memorial brick walkway engraved with names of loved ones lost on 9/11. In 2010, the school received a piece of World Trade Center steel, which it will display in a place of honor in the lobby.

The steel will be placed on a pedestal crafted from the same stone that was used on the floors of the World Trade Center buildings.

The rededication ceremony will include student presentations and songs, the unveiling of the steel and a visit to the garden. A reception will follow.
